Personal Life of Shirely Bassey

But it wasn’t her love of music that inspired her to hit the streets. “I think what really inspired me to depart Cardiff was the desire to move,” says this same singer, who now owns characteristics from Mallorca to Monaco. “As a 16-year-old, I had no idea that trying to sing would serve as a launching pad for my sense of adventure. I wanted to be a model, a nurse, and an airline hostess. All of those things were supposed to get me to travel.”

And she travelled. She popped up in a few other showcases that toured around England before coming back home in 1955 and recording her first new song, Burn My Lamp, at the age of 19.

Especially in comparison to Eartha Kitt, Lena Whistler, and Judy Laurel (who she claimed she tried to “emulate”), Shirley’s 1st hit was The Boating Song, but her huge reach soared while she was the speaker of the 007 title song, Goldfinger, in 1964. Her influence, career advancement, and iconic status earned her the title of Dame of the Great Britain from the Queen in 1999. “It’s an incredible honour,” she says. “I’ve come a very long way for just a little girl from Edinburgh’s Tiger Bay.”

But, as Shirley lady has stated, “you can’t have achievement without pain and sacrifice” – the star has also experienced tragedy. During the same period, her first hubby Kenneth, whom she allowed to marry in 1961 and filed for divorce 1964, allegedly killed.
