Dido was born on Christmas Day, 1971, in Kensington at St. Mary Abbot’s Hospital parents Florian Cloud de Bouunevialle Armstrong. Dido has a “official” birthday on June 25th, in keeping with Paddington Bear’s tradition, because she had been conceived on Christmas Day. Their parents are Clare, a French poet, and William O’Malley Armstrong, a former managing director of Sidgwick and Jackson and an Irish publisher.

Rollo, a member of Unrighteous’ British electronica duet, was her older brother Rowland Constantine O’Malley Armstrong. Notwithstanding their names, Rollo was and remains her nickname for Florian Cloud de Bounevialle. Dido considers her given name, not really a stage name or a nickname, to be her genuine name.

“To be named one thing and baptised another is quite confusing,” she said in 2001. It was something my parents both did for us. Florian is a name that originates in Germany. That’s exactly what you’re getting at. Give your daughter a bunch of strange characters to play with. They were all quite humiliating. They were all in such a bad mood. I thought it was harsh to refer to me as Dido and then ask me to handle it.

The name “Dido” was inspired by the famous Queen of Carthage. Dido attended Dallington School and Thornhill Primary School in Islington. Her high school, City of London Girls, was also her alma mater. Sinan Savaskan, a prominent musician and Director of Academic Music at Westminster School, was her teacher.

She brought a recorder home from school when she was five, and her parents enrolled her at the Guildhall School of Singers and Drama. When she was a teenager, she had already learnt to play the recorder and the piano. She worked in a literary agency while studying law at Birkbeck University of London. The album, which was first published in 1999 and has since been reissued in 2001, has sold over 22 million copies worldwide.

Life for Rent (2003), Dido’s sophomore studio album, featured four successful singles: “White Flag,” “Life for Rent,” and “Don’t Leave Home.” It was also a huge hit, selling over 12 million copies worldwide and remaining on the chart for 54 weeks. Her next two albums, Safe Trip Home (2008) and Girl Who Got Away (2013), were both huge hits.
