Pierce was born in the town of Bristol (in the ancient county of Avon), in South West England, as Patrick Connolly in 1961. He is the child of a devout Roman Catholic Irishwoman and an unidentified father. He spent his first two years of life at Nazareth House, a Catholic orphanage in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, before being adopted and raised on a council estate in Swindon, Wiltshire, in South West England.
