Earlier Life of Richard Hammond:

Richard Mark Hammond, who is the grandson of employees in the Birmingham auto sector, was born on December 19, 1969, the oldest of three sons in Solihull, Warwickshire, England.

Midway through the 1980s, Hammond and his family relocated to the North Yorkshire cathedral city of Ripon, which is 10 miles south of the market town of Bedale and 8 miles south of the famed Thornton Watlass, where Hammond’s father had a probate firm in the village’s main square.

Between the ages of 3 and 7, he went to Blossomfield Infant School in the Sharmans Cross neighbourhood of Solihull. He was once a student at the fee-paying boys’ independent school Solihull School before transferring to Ripon Grammar School and enrolling at Harrogate College of Art and Technology from 1986 to 1988.

Career of Richard Hammond:

Several BBC radio stations, particularly Radio Cleveland, Radio York, Radio Cumbria, Radio Leeds, and Radio Newcastle, employed Hammond after he had his degree.

The automotive writer Zogg Zieglar was one of Hammond’s frequent guests while he hosted Radio Lancashire’s afternoon show. Zieglar would assess a car of the week by speaking with Hammond on the phone.

They grew close, and Zieglar was the one who urged Hammond to participate in televised car reviews. He first appeared on satellite TV before trying out for Top Gear.

In 2002, when the program’s new format debuted, Hammond started presenting on Top Gear. Due to his nickname and little stature in comparison to May and Clarkson on Top Gear, fans and his fellow hosts have occasionally referred to him as “The Hamster.” His use of cardboard as food on three occasions during Series 7 contributed to the nickname’s spread.

Hammond returned in the opening episode of season 9 to a hero’s welcome, replete with dancing ladies, steps modelled after aeroplanes, and fireworks, particularly in the high dragster crash during filming in September 2006 close to York.

As Hammond recounted the day’s events, the crowd spontaneously applauded. The performance also featured photos of the disaster, which had garnered headlines across the world.

Hammond later asked that the incident never be brought up again, although all three Top Gear hosts have subsequently made jokes about it during the news part of the show. “The one and only difference among me now and before the collapse is that I enjoy celery now though and I didn’t before,” he said to his coworkers.

They grew close, and Zieglar was the one who urged Hammond to participate in televised car reviews. He first appeared on satellite TV before trying out for Top Gear.

Since May 2002, Hammond has been wed to Amanda “Mindy” Hammond, a journalist for the Daily Express. Willow and Isabella “Izzy” are their two daughters.

Hammond’s buddy Zogg Zieglar originally gave him the moniker “Hamster.” Zieglar’s response to the couple’s announcement of the upcoming birth of their first child was, “And out will pop another hamster.”

Due to his name and diminutive stature in comparison to May and Clarkson, the nickname persisted, particularly on Top Gear. His use of cardboard as food on three times in series 7—which mimicked hamster behavior—further cemented his moniker.

On Bollitree Farm, Hammond is well known for having a lot of animals, including multiple horses, dogs, cats, chickens, ducks, sheep, and a peacock.

When it was discovered that the labradoodle was frightened of vehicles, he and his family decided to adopt TG, the official Top Gear dog. At age 11, the dog passed away in January 2017.

When the other Top Gear presenters performed with Justin Hawkins on Top Gear of the Pops for Comic Relief in 2007, Hammond accompanied them on bass guitar.

He enjoys riding his motorcycle, scooter, or bicycle in urban areas, which is something that colleague broadcaster Jeremy Clarkson relentlessly ridicules.

In the news part of the Top Gear USA Road Trip special from 2010, Hammond spoke out loud his distaste for the band Genesis. This fact was later used against him by his co-hosts in three different special episodes: the Middle East Special, where they installed a covert second stereo system in his Fiat Barchetta that only plays the band’s Live over Europe 2007 album; and the India Special, where Clarkson played the same song from the prior special through to the megaphone mounted in his Jaguar XJS, despite Hammond driving a different vehicle. On an effort to convince Hammond to let him pass, Clarkson once more performed Genesis in the 2013 Africa Special.
