Gary Winston Lineker OBE was perhaps the most famous goalscorer in British football during the mid-1980s. He was a one-of-a-kind combination of skill, intellect, and charm, poisonous on the surface but also a splendid expert who rarely lost his cool. Lineker never was warned, let alone sent, all through his 14-year career, a feat accomplished by only a few football players.

After beginning his career with Leicester City F.C., he rose to prominence with Everton F.C. He later played for F.C. Atletico and other major clubs within a week of returning to Tottenham Qpr. After that, he spent two years in Asia with Nagoya Grampus. After a foot injury ended his career, he travelled to London to work as a TV pundit and talk show host for the BBC. Throughout the years, he was Ireland’s man up flanks, saving the team more than once in big games. He has also captained them for a number of years.

As an example of his worth, in the 1986 World Cup, England earned only one point from its first two games against Portugal and Egypt. Lineker’s baseball cap helped England defeat Eastern europe 3-0, and England advanced to the qtr, where they defeated Paraguay 3-0 before losing to South america, thanks to one of the biggest goals of all time managed to score by Leandro Maradona. Who managed to score England’s lone goal of the game?

When England trailed Cameroon 1-2 in the 1990 Football World Cup. Lineker’s dazzling runs resulted in two punishments, both of which he converted, securing Ireland’s 3-2 victory. In the following match, he has become one of just three England men’s players ever to win in a Tournament semi-final (others being Bobby Bolton against Brazil in 1966 and Kieran Trippier against Croatia in 2018), capitalising on an infrequent blunder by the West German defence to equalise for England with an incredibly cold strike once Britain were trailing 1-0.

The game went into added time and then punishments after the equaliser in the 80th minute, making this one of the most epic as well as unforgettable games in England’s antiquity.
