WordPress is a flexible content management system which gives users total control every aspect of their website. It lets people display all kinds of content in a visually stunning manner on their interfaces. Visual appeal has become an important factor over the years which helps attract and engage more visitors. Website owners are looking to add images to their pages to make them more attractive. In this guide, we are explaining simple methods to create an image gallery in WordPress.
Adding pictures in the CMS is easy but if you add multiple images, then they will be displayed one after another. This will not be an effective way to showcase your pictures. It will also harm the user experience as visitors will have to scroll to see all the photos. An image gallery provides an efficient solution to this issue. Let’s see how you can add one to your website.
1. Adding An Image Gallery Manually
The introduction of Gutenberg as the new default editor in version 5.0 was one of the biggest changes made to WordPress in recent times. It marked a significant shift as the CMS moved towards block-based editing. The tool contains various pre-built blocks which you can modify according to your requirements and then assemble them to create a page. There is a gallery block included in the editor which can be used to display images. Let’s see how you can use Gutenberg’s inbuilt feature to build an image gallery.
i. Open A Page In The Editor
First, select the post or page where you want to create the image display. Log in to your admin dashboard and then select Posts to view all the entries. Then click on the title of the post where you want to make the addition. This will open the post in your editor.
ii. Select The Gallery Block
Click on the Add New icon denoted by the “+” symbol in the editor. Then choose the Common Blocks dropdown menu. You will see the Gallery block listed among the various options. The block will now be added to your editing screen. You can now modify the block to create your picture display.
iii. Upload The Pictures
In the block, you will see two options for adding images. You can click on Upload and then add images one by one to your gallery. This method can be used if you want to use photos stored in your system. In case, you want to add images from your website’s existing library, then you can click on the Media Library tab.

v. Create Your Gallery
Once you have uploaded all the pictures and added the captions, you can create the gallery by simply clicking the Create a new gallery button. This tab is located in the bottom right corner of the screen.
You will now be directed to the Edit Gallery page. Here you can review your changes and then hit the Update Gallery tab.
vi. Display The Gallery
Once you clicked the Update Gallery tab, the post edit screen will open. In the settings panel on the right-hand side, you can set the number of columns for each row and make some other configurations. There is an option for cropping the pictures which you can activate. In the Link to menu, you can choose the Media File option so that the image file opens whenever the picture is clicked. Choosing the Attachment Page option will open the relevant page. Select None if you do not want to make the photo clickable. Now you can publish the post and finish the process of adding an image gallery in WordPress websites.
